Date: Tuesday, 2 December 2003, at 4:24 p.m.
NEW YORK AREA SEPI MEETING
THURSDAY, DECEMBER 11, 2003, 8:00PMAt the office of Dr. Helene Kafka
350 Central Park West, Apt. 7J @ 95th Street, Manhattan, NYCase Presentation:
“The Acrobatics of Split Transferences in Conjoined Therapy – A Dialogue”
by Ruth Heber, Ph.D.
The discussion will center upon issues that arise and need to be addressed when working as, or with, an adjunct therapist. It will include ethical and practical concerns, as well as interactions, communications, miscommunication, and competitions and the power struggles that occur as both therapists interact with the patient’s defenses, splits and projections. Case vignettes will be offered to illustrate successes and failures encountered by both therapists as they become caught in the vortex of “Good mammy/bad mammy”, “good object/bad object”, inflation/deflation gyrations, office to office compartmentalization, affect-cognition dissociations, and enactments of the family of origin dynamics.
Dr. Ruth Heber maintains a private practice in New York City and is an Assistant Clinical Professor in Psychiatry at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine. She is EMDR Institute Facilitator and EMDRIA Approved Consultant. Since 1994 she has worked to integrate EMDR and the psychoanalytic approaches, has repeatedly lectured about EMDR, given bridge courses, supervision courses, and holds ongoing study groups that focus upon integration of EMDR and Psychoanalysis. Dr. Heber has worked extensively with PTSD, survivors of Holocaust, cross-generational vicarious traumatization, and recently with survivors of the World Trade Center attack and the therapists who, themselves affected, are conducting treatment.
NY area organizers: Rebecca Curtis, Ph.D. and Ronald Murphy, Ph.D. SEPI is the Society for the Exploration of Psychotherapy Integration.
