Workshop: Sun. Jan. 9, 2005, 10:00 AM – 1:00 PM

Psychological Treatment in Disaster
Presenter: Laura Barbanel, Ed.D., ABPP

Program Description
On order to provide psychological assistance to individuals in the aftermath
of disaster and then in the ensuing trauma, we need to learn different skills
and techniques then the ones that we typically utilize. It involves an
understanding of “Psychological First Aid.” Sept 11, 2001 transformed our
understanding of trauma and the power of its effect on individuals. It has led to a
new understanding of the treatment in the immediate aftermath of disaster.
This workshop will focus on understanding disaster and trauma and the
responses that it evokes in individuals. Techniques for work with the victims of
disaster and trauma will be stressed. Clinician self help, an important ingredient
in the work with trauma, will be a focus as well.

Participants will gain knowledge of:
The impact of trauma on adults
The role of mental health during disaster and in treating trauma
