"Something revolutionary occurred in the mid-Fifties," says Dr. Richard Koenigsberg, "But we haven't quite defined what it was." On Friday, June 14 at 7:30 P. M ., social scientist and author Richard Koenigsberg, Ph.D., will present his research on psychoanalysis and rock 'n' roll-- the cultural forces that have transformed the American experience of the body and sexuality.
Freud stated that neurotic disorders "originate in the sexual needs of unsatisfied people." This was the psychoanalytic interpretation that rocked the world. In his talk, Koenigsberg will view Elvis Presley as the iconic figure symbolizing the American struggle to throw off the shackles of repression and constraints of civilization in order to release the body's soulful energies. Rock 'n' roll, Koenigsberg says, was the "nuclear explosion that split the atom and shattered the American ego, releasing a vast quantities of energy. We live in the aftermath of the blast that occurred all those years ago. The great ball of fire still glows and simmers-we're still hot, and trying to come to terms with the radioactive fallout."
OTHER BOOKS is the innovate, popular bookstore (located at 224 W. 20th Street between 7th and 8th Avenue) that has the most comprehensive collection of titles on psychoanalysis, psychotherapy and cultural studies in New York City.
Koenigsberg is the author whose books include THE PSYCHOANALYSIS OF RACISM, REVOLUTION AND NATIONALISM and SYMBIOSIS AND SEPARATION. His writings on the psychoanalysis of culture have been compared to those of Freud, Ernest Becker, Norman O. Brown and Herbert Marcuse.
