OCTOBER 15 AND 16, 2005

IPTAR PROGRAM COMMITTEE PRESENTS:
THE DEVELOPMENTAL THEORIES OF FREUD & KLEIN

OCTOBER 15 AND 16, 2005
Mt. SINAI HOSPITAL
HATCH AUDITORIUM (100th Street and Madison Avenue)

WHAT IS A CONTEMPORARY FREUDIAN AND KLEINIAN DEVELOPMENTAL THEORY? HOW DOES EACH THEORY INFLUENCE THEIR CLINICAL WORK? IN THE PAST these respective theories have viewed development in quite different ways. The Freudians have conceptualized a series of pre-Oedipal stages, leading up to the centrality of the Oedipal conflict and its ultimate resolution; Kleinians have seen development as the evolution of two major positions, with the paranoid-schizoid position evolving into the depressive position. For Kleinian theory the Oedipal conflict and the parental couple have occupied a central place in the mind of the infant during the first year of life; while Freudian theory has emphasized the need for greater differentiation before the conflict plays a significant role. These issues and many others (including the importance of aggression, envy and destructiveness) will, for the first time, be discussed by two LEADING KLEINIANS and two LEADING FREUDIANS who will elaborate their views regarding these controversial concepts. What for example, are the bridges (if any) between these two theories? What can each learn from the other? Following a series of discussions among the four presenters focusing on concepts and theory, a clinical case presentation will be used to highlight how their respective developmental perspectives inform their work with patients. Please join us in this fascinating exchange of ideas.
