2005 James McKeen Cattell Award

Thirty-Fifth Dissertation Competition

In its continuing effort to recognize high standards in dissertation research, the Section of Psychology of the New York Academy of Sciences announces the thirty-fifth competition for the annual James McKeen Cattell Award for an outstanding doctoral dissertation in psychology. The competition is limited to graduate students of accredited doctoral programs who either attained degrees or successfully defended their dissertations between July 1, 2004 and June 30, 2005. Each department or program is invited to nominate just one dissertation, submitted in the summary format described below, no later than October 1, 2005.

The winner will be announced in April 2006 on the Academy website and to its international membership, and will receive an Award Certificate. The mentor and doctoral program that directed the winner will also be awarded a Citation Certificate. Dissertations will be judged by the Steering Committee of the Section of Psychology, with the consultation of specialists in the area.

A summary of the dissertation should be submitted without personal or institutional identification according to these guidelines: 1200-1500 words of text, double-spaced format. A page or two consisting of tables and figures plus some references and key words may be added. Summaries will be assessed in terms of clarity of purpose and rationale, method and research design, results, with statistics as appropriate, and conclusions, with implications and/or applications. On a separate sheet, include the contact information of both the author of and the faculty mentor for the dissertation. E-mail submissions are preferred.

Following an anonymous review, the Steering Committee may request up to three copies of the dissertation itself, for final review by specialists. Please indicate the name of the person to be contacted should the dissertation be requested. The summary should be sent to:
