STORY OF "HOPE": SUCCESSFUL TREATMENT
OF OBSESSIVE COMPULSIVE DISORDER,
by PAUL CLEMENT
with Commentaries by
** ALAN KAZDIN, and
** DAVID BARLOWPaul Clement celebrates 40 years of seeing close to 1300 clients in his private practice by presenting the case of Hope: a 30-year-old woman presenting with obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), fear of flying, panic disorder without agoraphobia, nightmare disorder, and a childhood history of separation anxiety disorder. Clement’s case is distinctive for his integrative (cognitive-behavioral, client-centered, and positive psychology) approach, and for the system he has developed for quantitatively monitoring the progress of all his clients over the course of therapy. This system yields effect sizes of change for each client, allowing for comparison with outcome benchmarks derived from randomized clinical trials with similar clients.
Clement’s important clinical work is commented on by two of today’s leading figures in psychotherapy research, accountability, and policy development: Alan E. Kazdin, from Yale University and the current President-Elect of the American Psychological Association (APA); and David H. Barlow, Director of Boston University’s Center for Anxiety & Related Disorders and a recent member of the APA’s Presidential Task Force (2006) on “Evidence-Based Practice in Psychology.”
