Working with ego states and the interpersonal field: an introduction to parts work and concepts of Somatic Experiencing.
Sat. Oct 25, 10am-4pm, w.lunch break, at NIP, 250 West 57th St., suite 501, Conference Room. Cost: $125The workshop is designed to conceptualize and enhance new ways to work with ego states and relational issues for psychodynamic psychotherapists who are not trained in Somatic Experiencing (SE) but wish to understand the contributions made from this perspective and to consider incorporating them into their clinical work.
In the parts approach developed by Napier, somatic awareness is utilized to explore core identity, internal experiences, capacities & skills, unprocessed trauma states, and unintegrated aspects of personality.
The psychoanalytic concept of "multiple self states" is extended to include a somatic dimension and aspects of self-experience which may not be as easily accessed in traditional psychoanalytic practice.
In addition, by focusing on the interpersonal field created between client and practitioner, opportunities arise to track trauma responses that emerge within the relational/transference dynamics. Corrective experiences are enhanced when brought into sensory awareness in vivo.
We will also explore coupling dynamics, in which elements of experience become entangled or detached in ways that prevent movement beyond traumatic or "stuck" experiences.
The workshop will include didactic and experiential elements as well as time for audience questions and discussion.Nancy J. Napier, LMFT specializes in trauma work with individuals and work with couples on family-of-origin patterns in current relationships. In addition to SE she offers EMDR, hypnotherapy, mindfulness practice, work with attachment issues, TFT, and psychodynamically-based psychotherapy. The author of a number of books, she also teaches workshops for professionals and the public. She is a Somatic Experience Practitioner and faculty member of the Foundation for Human Enrichment.
