Requirements:

Candidates for all classes of membership are required to:

  • Support the purposes of the Association.
  • Live or work in Manhattan, the Bronx or Roosevelt Island or have a professional interest in the work of the association.
  • Maintain ethical standards of professional conduct in accordance with the New York State Psychological Association’s code of ethics and the New York State Education Department Code of Professional Conduct.
  • Be approved for admission by the Board of Directors.

Classes of Membership & Requirements:

There are 4 classes of membership: MEMBERS, ASSOCIATES, STUDENT AFFILIATES, and PROFESSIONAL ASSOCIATES.

MEMBERS of the Association are required to possess a doctoral degree in psychology from a program of psychology registered with the New York State Education Department or a substantially equivalent doctoral degree in accordance with the department regulations, or Be licensed as a psychologist in accordance with New York State Education Law, Article 153, and conform to the psychology statues in every jurisdiction in which they practice.

ASSOCIATES Require at least two years of full time graduate study in psychology, or a substantial equivalent in a recognized graduate school, or Possess a Master’s degree in psychology or its substantial equivalent, from a recognized graduate school. Shall have most of the rights and privileges of MEMBERS but not some, such as the right to vote and to hold office.

STUDENT AFFILIATES Are required to be students matriculated and enrolled full time in a graduate psychology program, a postdoctoral re-specialization program in a college or a university undergraduate psychology majors, and this needs to be attested to in a reference from a faculty member of the psychology department. Shall be entitled to most of the rights and privileges of MEMBERS of the association but not some, such as the right to vote or to hold office.

PROFESSIONAL AFFILIATES Shall be people who, at the time of application, maintain an ancillary relationship to psychology, and who the Board decide have an interest or function intrinsically related to psychology. Are ineligible for ASSOCIATE or STUDENT AFFILIATE membership at the time of application and thereafter, but have the right to receive all mailings.
