Dear Dr. Barrett,
With respect to your ideas, it is interesting as you pointed out
that the neurological defect in Korsakoff's syndrome bears some similarity to
certain common defenses. I have not, however, noted a lack of meaningful
connection or fear of abandonment in people with alcoholism to any degree greater
than in many people with other psychological problems. So, from my
experience, I would not say that this neurological deficit is especially ironic for
people with alcoholism.
