POSSIBLE SEMINAR:
Intersubjectivity (Joel Whitebook instructor)

PsyBC is trying something new and polling subscribers to see how much interest there is in a possible course. The number of weeks and tuition is still to be determined. Please e-mail us (psybc@psybc.com) and let us know what you think. (Put "Intersubjectivity" in the subject line.

Description:
Many psychodynamically oriented clinicians are perplexed by the influx of philosophical ideas into our journals, conferences and scientific meetings. They feel like they are being inundated with philosophical concepts --"positivism," "foundationalism," "pragmatism," "undecidability," "epistemology" and "the linguistic turn," to name a few -- and that they don't have the background to sort them out.

And there is no doubt that the methodological discussions of the past several decades have made an important contribution to psychoanalysis, for they have helped to free us from a worn out concepts of science. They have, however, often taken on a life of their own, which can lead to unnecessary theoretical divisions and take us too far from clinical reality. Unfortunately, these schisms often have more to do with politics than with theory.

Hoping to provide something of a "guide to the perplexed," Psybc is thinking about offering an online course on philosophy and psychoanalysis. The course will focus on the concept of "intersubjectivity," which is at the center of so many current controversies and which will inevitably lead us into a number of other important topics.

In order to get a handle on the concept of intersubjectivity, it will first be necessary to consider its origins in philosophy. We will then look at how and why it worked its way into psychoanalysis. Because the term has taken on so many theoretical and clinical meanings, we will try to sort them out in the attempt to get a clearer and more rigorous understanding of the concept and the issues that are at stake with it.

The instructor will be Dr. Joel Whitebook, who is especially well suited to teach the class. Not only is he a practicing analyst and a faculty member of the Columbia Psychoanalytic Institute, but he also has a doctorate in philosophy -- a field he has taught in for many years.
