The last ten years have brought numerous developments in clinical geropsychology including the establishment of the clinical geropsychology section of APA's Division 12 and the Committee on Aging, recognition of geropsychology as a proficiency, and expansion of the availability of psychological services to older adults. Psychotherapies originally developed for younger adults have been found useful in older people. One psychotherapy, Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT), has been found effective in reducing relapse in depressed older adults. This presentation will review recent developments in the field of geropsychology as well as the presenter's experience in conducting IPT with older adults and teaching the therapy to graduate students. The presentation will be supplemented with videotapes of IPT with older adults.

Gregory A. Hinrichsen, Ph.D. is the Director of Psychology Training at Long Island Jewish Medical Center - The Zucker Hillside Hospital. He has been actively involved in the field of aging since 1976. During his years at Hillside Hospital, he has provided clinical services to older adults and their families, supervised psychology graduate students, and directed a postdoctoral fellowship in clinical geropsychology. Author of over 50 publications, his research work has focused on family issues in late life, depression, and caregiving to older adults with dementia.

Dr. Hinrichsen is former president of the American Psychological Association's clinical geropsychology section and is incoming chair of APA's Committee on Aging.
