The first of a series of symposia conducted by Family Process, this symposium will explore what has often come to be diagnosed as PTSD in its social contexts. It will explore the range of experiences from clinicians attempting to heal traumatized individuals and families to peace-seeking groups attempting to heal traumatized ethnic groups in countries that have fought violent civil wars.

It will address such issues as the medicalization of the distress and suffering resulting from interpersonal and political violence and the role of witnessing and testimony in promoting healing, in the therapy room and on the national stage, e.g. the Truth and Reconciliation process. It asks how therapists and how communities can repair the damage left by violence and the tension between justice and reconciliation.
