  SOCIAL DRINKING

We often mistake a desire of the body for yearning of the soul.
-- Harry Austryn Wolfson

Moderate Drinking

Drinking in moderation can be relaxing and sociable. Indeed, The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism finds moderate drinking can even be healthful.

NIAAA finds, "There is a considerable body of evidence that lower levels of drinking decrease the risk of death from coronary artery disease"

To be sober, you should have no more that one drink per hour. A standard drink is generally considered to be 12 ounces of beer, 5 ounces of wine or 1.5 ounces of 80-proof distilled spirits. Each of these drinks contains roughly the same amount of absolute alcohol - approximately 0.5 ounce or 12 grams. A skinny woman on an empty stomach will get drunk faster and have higher blood alcohol levels for longer than a big, well fed man.
